Personally I don't like the classic buttery chardonnay. Even in the so-called 'good' examples of chardonnay, I feel like the oak is overdone and sort of manhandles the palate.I gravitate toward virgin chardonnay aged in steel, so that the beautiful pear and citrus notes shine through.
The Buena Vista Carneros 2005 has a flowery nose with a hint of meyer lemon. There is a little too much oak, but you can still pick up the pear and citrus notes. The finish is more mellow, with vanilla and pear.
The next time you're in Sonoma, do make a point to stop at Buena Vista. It's a beautiful winery and they do have some great offerings.
To Buy:
The best price is at Stirling Fine Wines: on sale for $12.99
The verdict: Depends. Like classic chardonnay? Drink me.
